  • A Levels

    WHAT IT IS

    Advanced level qualifications (known as A levels) are subject-based qualifications that can lead to university. A level examination is an advanced form of examination, which results usually grant you an automatic 200l admission to most accredited universities in Nigeria and abroad. You can normally study three or more A levels over two years, AS and A Level. They’re usually assessed by a series of examinations. Candidates writing A levels exam usually sit for three subject combination depending on the course the candidates want the study at University.

    The great thing about A levels examination is that the chance of gaining admission through A levels is very high, though each university has its cut-off mark for a particular course but candidates who perform above average in any of the A-level program usually gain admission.

    A level exams are not easy, so if you are preparing for this program you should sit tight and work hard to get the best results out of the examination.

    WHAT GRADES DO I NEED?

    You normally need:
    • at least five GCSEs at grades A to C
    • at least grade B in the specific subject(s) you want to study
    However, the specific requirements needed to study A levels will vary across schools and colleges. It’s important to check what you will need with the school or college you are looking to study at.

    WHO ARE THEY FOR?

    • A Levels are most commonly taken by candidates seeking admission into universities abroad (mostly UK)
    • It is also an alternative method of gaining admission into University without the use of JAMB. In other words, A level Programs are done by candidates that have already gotten their Ordinary Level Certificate with the aim of getting admission to an accredited University.

  • BSC

    WHAT IT IS

    It is a Bachelor of Science degree that is available in the universities. In the arts, it is called a Bachelor of Arts degree (BA). The degree can be attained through undergraduate programmes in over 100 different courses which include;

    • Agriculture
    • Business administration
    • Education
    • Engineering
    • Geology
    • Marine science
    • Zoology

    WHO IT IS FOR

    All students in universities are eligible to acquire the BSc degree, so long as they get the required credits and successfully complete the course(s) for which they were enrolled. Enrolment is based on acceptance after a series of exams and qualifying for the chosen course in a four or five year BSc programme.

    HOW IT IS ACQUIRED

    The Bachelor of Science degree is attainable after the successful completion of tertiary education as an undergraduate in any university. Entrance examinations are carried out annually. Admission is based on the cut-offs and successful registration process. Some courses run for four years while some are five (although courses like medicine and law have additional years for professionalism). At the end of the programme, the student is a BSc holder in whatever field they studied which makes them capable of practicing and employment.

  • MSC

    WHAT IT IS

    The Master of Science degree is the higher variant of the BSc.
    It is the further specialization of an undergraduate course with increased professionalism. The Msc course typically runs for just a year, after which the degree is issued. There are specific institutions which offer the MSc degree in their programmes, some of which are;

    • Business Administration
    • Geography
    • Guidance and Counselling
    • Linguistics
    • Mass Communication
    • Psychology
    • Sociology

    WHO IT IS FOR

    Students who have completed their BSc degrees and met the required assessment grades are eligible for entry into the MSc programmes which may be full time or part-time mode of study. These students are aspiring professionals in the field they pursue and are usually of a higher average-age than students in the BSc programmes.

    HOW IT IS ACQUIRED

    MSc is not available in every Nigerian university, unlike the BSc. Also, there are certain courses which are yet to be offered at the MSc level. Upon screening and registration, the specific conditions of acceptance for the specific year are released and successful students begin the process of acquisition through study.
    The acquisition of an MSc increases the level of expertise and credibility in the field, with prospects for further employment opportunities.

  • PHD

    WHAT IT IS

    This stands for Doctor of Philosophy and is available across a vast range of courses but in significantly less diverse options than the BSc and Msc. It is the postgraduate doctorate degree and it is the highest attainable degree in University education under programmes which include;

    • Botany
    • Creative arts
    • Economics
    • English literature
    • Guidance and Counselling
    • Linguistics
    • Mathematics
    • Microbiology

    WHO IT IS FOR

    Students who have completed both the MSc and BSc levels of educational specialization and show exceptional skills in their field(s). Interested students can apply to begin the doctoral degree in the institution of their choice. Due to past educational qualification, the PHD can be acquired via long distance learning.

    HOW IT IS ACQUIRED

    The completion of a thesis or dissertation of a research topic makes an individual eligible for the PHD degree. The decision of the examining panel following the presentation and defense of the thesis determines the acquisition of the degree.
    Typically, it takes four (4) years to complete an eligible research or study although some have acquired the degree in less or more. An individual with a doctorate can work as a lecturer or consultant in the field of study.
    A PHD in any field is a certification of the highest level of educational expertise which places the individual in the top tier of the field of specialization.
